I'm kind of tired of high fantasy stereotypes, and after the popularity of the Tolkein movies, it didn't help. The kids at work did not seem understand that dwarves were still medium creatures, even though they're not as tall as elves or humans. They also think of elves as feminine and "gay".
The races are still undeniably influenced by core races, but I'm hoping by shifting their envrionments around, and giving them unique flavor and culture not normally associated with their core rules counterparts, it will set them apart from the core races enough to break players of these stereotypes.
I'm still an amateur game designer, so in an attempt to keep things "balanced", I'm going to compile a list of of all the core racial abilities granted the different races. I'll then assign these across the board as I see fit, with a few modifications for racial abilities which don't exist that I want, such as a Swimming bonus for the Aedar. We'll see how that turns out, and I'll be posting that stuff under the different races as I copmlete it.

You may want to check Kismets posts on factions. Some good inspiration there.
